Here's an idea for you...remount your panels on a 2-axis rotating ground based system. You'll likely get more than 1/3 more electricity just by having a 2-axis system that follows the sun's movement from sunup to sundown.

Wondering if you calculated distribution/delivery charges into your savings? I'm running some numbers now so it's fresh in my memory but looking at my current bill I pay about $0.09 per kWh but that's just for the power. Getting it to me costs another $0.14 or so bringing my actual price per kWh from the grid to $0.23.

I do like home solar, but I don't think the financial benefits are a clear win cut just yet. My calculations have no break even point when accounting for opportunity cost. If you instead invest $8243k with 7% real returns (after inflation), and you continue to save $1314 per year (after adjusting for inflation): solve for y: 1314*y-8243*1.07^y If you assume 6% real returns (1.06), the break even is 15 years, 5% real returns 10 years. If we assume that power companies also transition to solar as it becomes more and more economically viable, we can also expect the utility cost per kWh to go down (vs. inflation).

We had to do ours like Johnny Cash got his Cadillac. One piece a time. We started out with a 45 watt Harbor Freight system. Added 2 100 watt panels 3 times so far and still going. We have a generic 10 watt panel that is for charging cell phones and 2 way radios. At this point i can power my fridge, 40" TV, DVD player a pair of small table lamps and a 20" box fan. I also use the 2, 5 or 15 watt fluorescent bulbs that came with the HF kit. I can generate about 650 watts now. Next month 850. Ive invested around $800 so far plus batteries. I get a great deal on them. I pay $105 for 110aH sealed acid type. Our system isn't top notch, but my fridge, tv, movies and most lighting is FREE. By adding what we did i was able to cut my power bills in half.

The batteries are the one thing I would say is not too great for the environment. However, i think that using that energy from the solar panels to make hydrogen as the stored energy and use a fuel cell to get that energy back at night. The only bi product would be water. But fuel cells still need to be improved upon before this is truly realistic.

It's real easy to see if the energy needed to produce solar can be paid off: the manufacturer had to pay for that energy when they built them, so that cost is included in the purchase price. Energy plus raw materials plus labor cost all included. Obviously solar is worth it, especially if it pays off in 6.27 years. Even paying for installation is worth it, but will take longer.

Ok, you addressed the net energy cost debate about solar panels. But what about the environmental cost of harvesting the required materials to make them at "large scale or at quantity"? People like you never talk about the materials or processing required to make panels, let alone all the accessory items needed to complete the system (tons of Cu wire, lithium batteries/Nickle cad./acid batteries, etc...). You need a LOT or VERY large batteries to hold your 8Kw system. Just look at how Lithium is processed/mass produced (the most efficient battery available now). It is not environmentally friendly in the slightest, and yet your system requires large amounts of Li to function...

Wouldn't you be better off just investing that 8 grand in the market? I mean I'm no finance major or anything but plugging 8 grand into an investment calculator at 8%, you end up at 37k after 20 years. That same solar array nets you like 27k in savings after 20 years assuming the same production (but of course, assuming the same cost rate too).

  70. MobileChaos
    Пре 21 дан

Battery backups for Solar has been traditionally for off grid living, however the reality is that the power company doesn't store the energy you send to them and they have to produce the energy you get back from them. It does put a burden on the energy company to either use all this excess power they didn't produce during the day, and provide power to those who were sending the excess power to them at night. This is one of the reasons to store your own power, so you don't have to rely on the fossil fuel energy that the power company will send back and you are not as much of a burden to the grid. I have always though it would be great if home builders would build communities with all solar houses and a localized battery grid. This way all houses would charge the localized battery grid during the day and take energy from that same grid over night. This should make the cost of buying and maintaining the batteries lower than a single battery panel on a house. Something I could see Tesla create. A Tesla community equipped with Super Charger parking.

A mistake in your math: after 6 years back to 80% yield on the panels, which then keeps going down each following year. The 80% won't stay there indefinitely for the next 30 years, not to mention the panels cracking or breaking by faulty production, or accidental damage over time, lowering the overall yield even more. But I am glad to see you were smart enough to get the better panels and not the cheap stuff which will never make your money back, and next to your math for profit, by your own statement you need to add 2 extra years of profit to offset the creation of the panels, years of even increasing lower yields. On the whole your math checks out though, as I did mine as facts became available while pausing the video. I have seen so many RSlostrs not do the 'break even' math back to the costs of the panels and just hail the 'profits' while forgetting the costs. Mind you, instalment if done by professionals, or if you calculate your own hours as billable hours you could have been working and earning money, is much much higher, and it can take you 10 to 20 years of diminishing returns to break even, all the while watching breakthroughs in solar that will make you hate yourself for having 'inferior panels compared to the new stuff', making it very tempting to buy new ones and start the investment over with a deficit, as 'being green' is very addictive.

Real question:. Did your property taxes go up? I'm tempted to do this but we both know the likelihood that you'll have 20-30 year old solar panels on your roof is 0%. Technology in solar is moving too fast, I wonder if before 7 years are up those panels will look prehistoric. Not trolling, honest questions that have stopped me from moving ahead with this.

Have had Tesla panels since 2018 and then power walls in 2019. Inverter failed 2020 and down for two months. That inverter failed in May 2021 and I have been down 1 month so far. Tech support could care less. No way to escalate unless I get a lawyer. Hoping to tag on to a class action law suit. Had the house appraised for refinance this month and the $40k we paid had no impact on the evaluation. The other problem is that Tesla will not pull from stock that is set for new installs or even stock temp replacements incase of failure. They have to get a replacement from the inverter mfg and there is no priory for existing customers. Tech support gets a big zero in my situation. I have $50k worth of useless equipment right now. It is a liability if I had to sell the house.
